In cities across the country including Kansas City, communities are coming together to provide alternative housing solutions for Veterans in need. Take the Veterans Community Project for example, “is on a mission to eliminate veteran homelessness by providing transitional-housing and enabling access to exceptional 360-degree service solutions. Focusing first in the Greater-Kansas City area, VCP aspires to use Kansas City as the blueprint for achieving similar successes in cities across the United States. VCP has a long-term goal of eliminating Veteran homelessness nationwide.”

It takes a village of tiny houses” While there are many complex issues involved the economics, current motivation and potential impact makes this a very exciting time. KasasCity.com reads; “ReStart and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs say that by 2017 the area will have provided enough shelter to chronically homeless veterans to reach a target called “functional zero.” Based on a complex formula that has its critics, the term applies to communities able to show that the numbers of veterans placed in permanent housing on a monthly average exceed the number of those known to be homeless.” As we head into this Memorial Day weekend on 2017 let’s keep in mind what the holiday really means. According to WikiPedia “The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May,[2] originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868″
For me Memorial Day is about sacrifice.
If you are grilling out and enjoying freedom, friends and fresh air this holiday ask yourself if you might be willing to make a bit of a sacrifice yourself. That sacrifice might come in the form of volunteering at a shelter, Habitat for Humanity or something similar. You might be more comfortable contributing financially to help those in need. While giving of your time, energy and finances is important the deeper sacrifice may be accepting people who are not perfect into your community and your life. While helping to build a single tiny home for a veteran is admirable, voting to approve a tiny house village for veterans in your community may be a more difficult sacrifice for some.
Regardless of your actions, take some time this Memorial Day holiday to appreciate the sacrifice of others and consider what sacrifices you are comfortable making to pay it forward!
