Tiny House Appendix in ICC International Residential Code 2018

2018 IRC Tiny House Appendix

What is the impact of Tiny House Appendix in ICC International Residential Code 2018?

Formally including a tiny house appendix to the International Residential Code in 2018 will be a huge milestone in the industry and lead to a domino effect of other great changes. Tiny House Build is an organization playing a key role in the movement. “According to the organization, a tiny-house-specific appendix will be part of the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC), allowing people to receive Certificates of Occupancy for tiny houses when built to meet the provisions of the adopted code appendix.”

Why is this so important? Without a standard to base building code on for tiny houses there is no unified process for certifying, lending and insuring tiny houses. By putting this standard in place through the proper global organization will set the stage for standardization in these subsequent industries. Lenders will be more comfortable and see less risk in financing tiny houses. Insurance companies will feel the same, allowing tiny house specific policies and reasonable rates.

The International Residential Code provisions provide many benefits, among which is the model code development process that offers an international forum for residential construction professionals to discuss prescriptive code requirements. This forum provides an excellent arena to debate proposed revisions.
